INTRODUCING: Charli Howard

A lot has happened for you since your open letter to your ex modelling agency back in 2015… moving to NYC, co-founding the 'All Woman Project’, fronting major fashion/beauty campaigns and writing two books! What stands out to you the most on the journey you have been on?

Honestly it’s been crazy. I feel like I’m constantly on an adventure and so grateful to get to experience things I’d never usually be able to, like shooting in the Maldives. I think the biggest thing that stands out to me is how much more confident I’ve become in myself and how I’m able to put my foot down and say “no” to things I’m not comfortable with.

You have had a couple of girls approach you today whilst on our shoot and it is very clear to see that you are helping a lot of people. How important is social media for you?

From a career point of view, it’s very important - it allows me to send a message and cultivate a ‘brand’ of my own (which I’d like to think is a positive one!), as well as meeting lovely women like I did on the shoot. From a personal point of view, it exposed me to diverse body shapes, encouraged me to appreciate my own body image and understand different points of view others than my own. I know social media tends to get a bad reputation sometimes but I think it can be used positively when you follow accounts that make you feel good.

Has living in NYC influenced your personal style?

I seriously got into vintage clothing when I came to New York - I’m lucky to live in an area with some great shops. I’ve also discovered so many female-owned, independent designers like Miaou, Brinker & Eliza & Laura Lombardi.

Is there anything that you miss about London?

Oh, so much! The sense of humour, the roast dinners, my family...

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

It’s hard to pinpoint just one person but I think my dad has really influenced my work ethic and ability to never give up/not take no for an answer!

How does the House of Holland design connect to you aesthetically?

It’s fun, it’s cool but has that feminine edge, like that denim skirt that made me feel very womanly.

What does it mean to you to be part of House of Holland Life?

I grew up as a teen watching Henry’s shows religiously and would try and recreate his looks myself with his famous slogan t-shirts!

So the teen inside me is so grateful, it means a lot.

Finally a question we are asking all our #HOHGirls…What do you think is wrong with the world?

I think we still have such a long way to go in terms of equality and the way women and young girls are treated - from period poverty to domestic abuse to fair pay. If we treat women like equals and not as second class citizens, the world would be a much better place.
